Our Goals

CONTROL OF DONKEY HEALTH

Donkeys are susceptible to various infectious diseases that are common for all equids. The objectives of our study are to analyze the presence of the diseases that can lead to reproductive disorders (Equine herpesvirus1 disease, Equine viral arthritis, Brucellosis, Leptospirosis) and to develop a recommendation of reproductive status in domestic donkeys that are used for diary production. In total, blood samples of one hundred domestic donkeys and tested. In addition, vaginal swabs will be sampled and analyzed by real-time PCR and RT-PCR method. Based on the obtained results, Risk assessment and Feasibility study will be created.

MICROPLASTICS AND ORGANIC CONTAMINANTS IN ENVIRONMENT

Organic contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCP) and phthalates can bind to the surface of microplastics and can pollute environment. During the project will be determined the presence of PAH, PCB, OCP, phthalates and microplastics in water, feed and soil on the pasture and in the stables where the donkeys reside. Feed and water samples will be collected every three months during the three phases of the project. The analyses will be performed on GCMS and HPLC-UV instruments, and microplastics determination with FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer device).

QUALITY OF RAW DONKEY MILK

Donkey milk is consumed mostly raw. A couple of project activities will encompass laboratory analyses for microbiological and chemical safety, and the nutritional profile of raw donkey milk from the donkey population located in the Special Nature Reserve “Zasavica”. The following parameters will be determined: fat, total proteins, dry matter and ash, pH and lactose. The total contents of Ca, Mg, Na, K, Zn, Cu, and P. Activities related to the determination of contaminants in milk will include determination of toxic elements (Pb, Cd, As, Hg) and Aflatoxin M1. As well, PAHs, PBS, PCB, OCP, phthalates and microplastics will be tested by various laboratory methods.

SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY

The project's innovative character is to prepare a patent application and technical solution. The patent application refers to a new product and a new technology for the production of donkey milk cheese with the addition of cow's milk. A technological solution is related to increasing the safety and quality of donkey milk by introducing machine milking, which avoids the contamination of milk by direct contact while manually milking. The implementation of machine milking will improve the milking of donkeys in “Zasavica” reserve and ensure healthier milk for human consuption.

RESTORATION OF DEGRADED ECOSYSTEMS

Through various types of dissemination of research results, organizing workshops, international symposium, publishing scientific papers, creating a website and distributing information through social networks, we will raise awareness about the restoration and conservation of endangered biodiversity. Risk assessment and Feasibility study will be created on the base of obtained results from wide range of investigation that will be statistically analyzed. It will serve to future risk management directions and biodiversity conservation policy initiatives of the domestic donkey population in Serbia.
